Inside the Mind of a Killer
"Anything that happens in our world is just that, a happening. Anything else is relative to the observer, but yet we try to have a "universal law" or "code" of what is good and bad and that isn't f****** correct. We shouldn't be allowed to do that. We aren't Gods."- Eric Harris
"Maybe we should start knifing people, that might be more fun." -Dylan Klebold

Why did they do it?
""Get up!" Harris yelled to the students. "Everyone with white hats, stand up! This is for all the stuff you've given us for the past four years! All jocks stand up!" When nobody stood up Harris said, "Fine, I'll start shooting anyway!"
Throughout their lives in school, Eric and Dylan had been outcasts. They were also tormented throughout middle school and high school, leaving them isolated. This isolation did have some part of the reason that they did what they did. It is possible that they went into the school to get revenge, and that would be supported by Harris's quote about killing athletes.
Another possibility as to why they went into school that day is that they had mental illnesses, not because they were bullied. A team of psychologists and psychiatrists, from the FBI, came to the conclusion that they suffered from mental illness. They came to the conclusion that Eric may have been a psychopath. He was described as manipulating, and calculated. Dylan, on the other side, "was hurting on the inside".
While nobody will ever know why Eric and Dylan did what they did on that tragic day, people can know that this day brought change to America because it put fear into the lives of Americans. This fear resulted in increased gun control, improved school safety, intensified mental health services, and furthered the prevention of school violence in the future.
